This Good Friday, we travel north into Scotland, making suitable comfort stops enroute to our hotel in the Trossachs National Park. Located in Aberfoyle, this charming village is set on the banks of the River Forth in the magnificent Queen Elizabeth Forest Park. Perhaps wander along its attractive main street, jam-packed with individual shops, cafés and restaurants or visit the Trossachs Discovery Centre during your stay.
Today, we tour 'Rob Roy Country' as we explore the stunning Trossachs, Scotland's first national park. Located between the lowlands and highlands, immerse yourself in an area of varied landscapes that encompass rolling hills, tranquil lochs, and rugged mountains. We enjoy a visit to Callander, a bustling market town and tourist hub; set dramatically beneath high, wooded crags, Callander gained fame as the location for the original Dr Findlay's Casebook TV series. We continue our tour, returning along Loch Venachar and Loch Achray through the village of Brig o'Turk and over Duke's Pass as we return to our hotel.
Our Easter Sunday excursion takes us along the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond to the picturesque conservation village of Luss. A settlement since medieval times, much of the current town dates back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when it was redeveloped to house workers from the nearby quarries. Covered in rambling roses, the pretty cottages line the narrow streets that lead down to the waterfront, providing magnificent views of the loch and the surrounding hills and mountains. Later in the day, we take to the water itself with a circular cruise to enjoy the scenery from a different angle, accompanied by tea, coffee, and Scottish shortbread onboard, plus an informative commentary that keeps us entertained along the way.
We begin the drive home with a visit to the Kelpies, a colossal monument to horse-powered heritage across Central Scotland, whose name derives from a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend said to haunt rivers and streams. From here, we continue back over the border into England and return home.
Situated in the idyllic Trossachs National Park, just a short stroll along the banks of the Forth River from the famous village of Aberfoyle, the Rob Roy Hotel offers excellent food, friendly staff, and comfortable ensuite bedrooms with televisions and tea and coffee-making facilities.
